Abstract
The medical diagnoses of causes for decreased vision in 150 blind and 540 partially seeing pupils were classified according to a modification of a nomenclature scheme developed by the National Society for the Prevention of Blindness. The classification is by site and type of affection. Implications of the classification are discussed and trends indicated. The program of special education for visually impaired children in the Chicago Public Schools is described and the methods of case finding, examination, use of medical information and educational planning are discussed. Blind children constitute .03 of one percent, and partially seeing 0.1 of one percent of the total enrollment in the Chicago Public Schools. Keywords
