Abstract
It is argued that prison overcrowding distorts offender classification decisions, and, further, that certain classification policies may worsen the extent and effect of crowding. Examples from recent court cases are provided. Yet, as suggested in the recommendations made for rec tifying this situation, classification can be a useful tool for coping with crowded prisons.Keywords
