Cholesterol Crystals in Synovial Fluid

Abstract
Possible factors responsible for the deposition of cholesterol crystals in a joint cavity of patients with rheumatoid arthritis were discussed. Animal experiments in which cholesterol crystals were injected into the skin and knee joint of a rabbit showed that these crystals could initiate a local inflammatory response. The cholesterol crystals in the synovial fluid could have aggravated the inflammatory reaction locally and produced a more chronic course in the articulations involved.
