Abstract
A brief discussion of the economic, legal, and ethical dilemmas created by modern medicine's ability to prolong life prefaces a summary of the recommendations found in Deciding to Forego Life-Sustaining Treatment, a report issued in March 1983 by the President's Commission for the Study of Ethical Problems in Medicine and Biomedical and Behavioral Research. Dunea believes that many of the Commission's conclusions are tentative, but sees this report as an important first step in opening public dialogue on difficult policy issues.
