TRENDS State Medical Associations In the report on trends in continuing medical education (CME) (JAMA234(suppl):1370-1431, 1975), 12 state medical associations had adopted policies requiring CME as a condition of membership. As of Aug 1, 1976, a total of 14 states have reported actions that could be interpreted as requiring CME as a condition of membership. These states are Alabama, Arizona, Florida, Kansas, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Montana, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, and Vermont. A period of years may be required to implement such a policy. Members of the society must be informed of the decision. Policies, procedures, and criteria for implementing a CME requirement must be developed and adopted. In addition, plans for implementation must give the membership adequate time to meet the requirement on or before the effective date.
