Abstract
The vegetation is open, belonging to the general Arctic types known as fjeldmark and wet tundra. On dry shingle, colonization proceeds extremely slowly but more rapid transitions are observed on silt. Dryas fieldmark with Cassiope tetragona is the best developed community though it is doubtful if there is any real climax. Hypnum peat is a feature of the bogs, showing stratification remniscent of Sphagnum peat. Notable species absent from the area are Empetrum nigrum, Vaccinium uliginosum, Rubus chamaemorus, Betula nana and Sphagnum species. There is an abundance and variety of Carices but Luzula conjusa seems to be absent. Full lists and typical soil analyses are given and the effect of soil and air temps. is treated. Keywords
