Abstract
A theory is presented which explains the spin-flip transition in chromium in terms of coupling to the spontaneous strain. The spin density wave is treated in a Landau formulation and both spin-independent electron-strain coupling and magnetostriction couple the strain to the spin density wave. This coupling explains the observed spontaneous strain and the spin-flip transition. The spin-independent coupling is much larger than the magnetostriction. Keywords
