History and Development of Beef and Dairy Performance Programs in the United States

Abstract
This paper was included in a symposium on beef cattle performance programs in the beef session of the American Society of Animal Science meeting in 1966. A general chronology of the dairy performance program and a more detailed chronology of the beef performance programs are included. The dairy program seems to be approximately 25 years ahead of the beef programs. Attitudes of clientele and the current forces affecting the beef programs are described. The importance of improvement in the coordination of the beef performance programs of the USA in emphasized. The opportunity and need for international planning is also emphasized.
