Abstract
To the Editor: nutritional status has been shown to be a very important determinant of plasma somatomedin C concentrations.1 Recent studies have suggested that somatomedin C measurements may be better indicators of nutritional repletion in malnourished patients than previously used indexes.2 , 3 Since many of these patients have chronic inflammatory processes, such as inflammatory bowel disease, we questioned whether active inflammatory disease itself may affect plasma somatomedin C levels. After obtaining informed consent, we measured somatomedin C in 28 patients (22 females and 6 males) with active rheumatoid arthritis. Similar measurements were made in age-matched and sex-matched controls with benign thyroid . . .Keywords
