Abstract
Patients with chronic venous insufficiency were compared to matched controls in terms of blood and plasma viscosity, haematocrit, blood cell filterability, red cell aggregation, fibrinogen and ESR. The results show that in chronic venous insufficiency plasma viscosity and red cell aggregation are elevated, while blood cell filterability is reduced. Furthermore, the venous blood flow velocity (as determined by Doppler technique) correlates inversely with both plasma viscosity and red cell aggregation. We conclude that the systematic rheological abnormality increases the resistance to venous blood flow and may represent a contributory factor of venous stasis in this disorder. Keywords
