Interrelationships between golgi, gerl and synaptic vesicles in the nerve cells of insect and gastropod ganglia

Abstract
Nerve cells from the locust Schistocerca and the snails Helix and Lymnaea were treated with the zinc iodide-osmium tetroxide (ZIO) method. A positive ZIO response was found, not only in the synaptic vesicles, but in the Golgi saccules and vesicles, in GERL [golgi-endoplasmic reticulum-lysosomes], in multivesicular bodies and other lysosomes, and in axonal vesicles and cisternae of endoplasmic reticulum (ER). The similarity in ZIO reaction supports the possibility that components of the synaptic vesicles are formed in the Golgi zone of the nerve cell bodies and migrate to the synapses via the axonal smooth ER.
