Abstract
Health promotion it a relatively new concept and has many implications for both public health and medical sociology. Nonetheless, new ideas do not occur in a vacuum, but are part of a context which it sometimes decipherable and often inscrutable. The following essay or ‘debate piece’, consists of some ruminations about the nature of health promotion, medical sociology and the ‘new’ public health. It is not intended to provide answers, but to generate discussion.
