Pulex Simulans And P. Irritans On Dogs In Hawaii (Siphonaptera: Pulicidae)1

Abstract
Pulex irritans L. was believed to be the only species of Pulex in Hawaii until P. simulans Baker was discovered in 1963 on a dog at Punaluu, Island of Hawaii. Evidence indicates P. simulans has been in Hawaii more than 43 years but was confused with P. irritans. In 1964, a survey of Pulex infesting dogs on Hawaii showed P. simulans widespread, but P. Irritans present only on the northern half of the island where it occurred most frequently at higher elevation, especially at Kukuihaele. The wider distribution of P. simulans included the driest, wettest and warmest areas sampled on Hawaii. At least 3 dogs were infested with both species. P. simulans was recorded for the first time from Oahu and Kauai, but not Molokai, Lanai or Maui.
