Abstract
High speed cine photography of a Tokamak discharge has shown cellular instabilities around the plasma surface during the current rise phase. These instabilities have mode numbers up to m=20. The m number is correlated with the value of the safety factor, q, at the plasma surface and it is suggested that the instability is a kink/tearing mode. Keywords
