Abstract
Congenital cystic dilatation of the common bile duct is a very important, albeit a very uncommon, condition. Only 242 cases have been reported in the literature since Vater76 published the first case report, in the year 1723. The total number includes 175 cases reviewed by Shallow and his associates in 1943,63 57 cases reported since then and analyzed in this review, and 10 cases reported individually * for which data were not available for inclusion here. The present study undertakes to bring the literature up to date and to report three new cases in detail. Although many different designations have been used for this disease, the term "congenital cystic dilatation of the common bile duct" is the one regarded as most appropriate.
