PULMONARY ALVEOLAR PROTEINOSIS - TREATMENT BY PULMONARY SEGMENTAL FLOODING

Abstract
A case of a 2nd patient with pulmonary alveolar proteinosis successfully treated by pulmonary segmental flooding with saline and heparin in saline is presented. The importance of pulmonary flooding as a method of treatment is suggested by the localized clearing of the flooded segments when saline alone is used. Correlation of clinical and pathologic findings suggests that phagocytosis plays an important role in the clearing of alveolar material following this form of therapy.
