Abstract
A behavioral bioassay was used to determine the maximum range over which visual cues attract aflfalfa weevils, Hypera postica (Gyllenhal), to their principle host plant. The range proved to be dependent on the amount of alfalfa used, but in general, a weevil's response did not decline significantly until the alfalfa subtended an angle less than 120° in its visual field. The visual response was also shown to be only moderately host specific; weevils could distinguish alfalfa from periwinkle and Douglas fir branchlets, but could not discriminate between alfalfa and red clover, oats, bluegrass, or beans. Keywords
