Abstract
A new, and possibly primary, effect of heavy metals on fishes is described. It is demonstrated that heavy metals so affect fishes as to cause a drop in the salt concentration in the blood serum. This change in the ionic content of the blood can cause the fish to become weakened, and pronounced change can be fatal. Salt changes in the blood were monitored by osmometry. The effects of both zinc and copper were evaluated.
