Abstract
The anaesthetic techniques used for direct current shock in the treatment of 150 patients (170 episodes) with cardiac arrhythmias are described and discussed. The combination of pethidine as premedication, thiopentone or methohexitone for induction, nitrous oxide, oxygen and 0·5 per cent halothane if needed, is recommended. The indications for and techniques of this form of treatment in the management of cardiac arrhythniias are briefly described and the short and long term results and complications reported. Keywords
