Abstract
Various definitions of a Hermitian tensor operator are reviewed. Counterexamples are given to several selection rules previously proposed for such tensor operators. New selection rules based on the transformation characters of tensor operators under the joint action of time reversal and Hermitian conjugation are proposed to resolve these problems. Keywords
