Abstract
THE possibility of preventing the formation of a so-called amputation neuroma on the distal end of the proximal part of a cut peripheral nerve is one that has to be commonly faced by general and orthopedic surgeons. The need for such prevention and the method of assuring it appear to be neither recognized nor practiced, however. For example, an orthopedic surgeon of considerable note stated publicly, in a meeting at which one of us was present, that it was impossible to prevent the formation of such neuromas.
