UROPEPSIN OUTPUT IN CATS TREATED WITH CAFFEINE AND HISTAMINE

Abstract
Agents which stimulate gastric secretion, e.g., caffeine and histamine, were administered to cats. There was no difference between the control and test uropepsin output in any of the 4 cats while on a low protein diet, but on a high protein diet, one of 3 cats showed a definite response, one showed no change and one, which refused its food, showed a decreased output. All cats showed, however, a significant increase of uropepsin output following the change to the high protein diet, Appetite and diet appear to be more potent factors in altering uropepsin output than caffeine and histamine the action of which in stimulating gastric secretion is quite independent of the kind and quality of food eaten.
