Abstract
The incidence of leukemia or other dyscrasias following the use of radioactive iodine (RAI; I131) for hyperthyroidism is rare. It is generally agreed that its occurrence is probably coincidental and not related to the relatively small amount of ionizing radiation given by the usual therapeutic dose of I131. However, all examples of associated neoplastic disease should be recorded in order to permit evaluation of a possible causal relationship. This report concerns one case of chronic lymphatic leukemia and one of giant follicular lymphoblastoma which occurred after I131 treatment for hyperthyroidism. Report of Cases Case 1. —A 65-year-old white man, a known diabetic, was examined in August, 1954. His height was 5 ft. 10 in.; weight, 162 lb. The head and neck were normal except for a nodule in the right lobe of the thyroid gland. The heart was regular (rate, 84), not enlarged, and without murmurs.
