Abstract
For the purpose of studying the effect of sulfonamides on purulent otitis interna 18 guinea pigs were infected with virulent hemo-lytic streptococci direct into the cochlea, and 12 guinea pigs into the middle ear after preparation with a solution of arsenic trioxidc and hydrochloric acid. Every second animal was treated with prontosil, the others served as controls. The animals were killed 1 to 12 days after infection. Serial sections were made from the infected ears. The investigations revealed that prontosil treatment checked the spread of infection, especially at those points where there were natural obstructions and narrow spaces. Consequently prontosil restricts the spread of infection and lessens the destruction of tissue.
