Euler Beams on a Two Parameter Foundation Model

Abstract
A computer program for the analysis and design of finite length beams on soil subjected to general loadings and end support conditions is presented. The soil model used was the Vlasov model wherein the displacements within the foundation media were expressed by two finite series which allowed the deflection of the beam to be approximated by solution of ordinary diff. eq. rather than partial diff. eq. Results from examples indicated that the maximum beam deflection increased with increasing soil layer thickness to a critical thickness beyond which the layer thickness had negligible influence. This critical thickness was found to be inversely proportional to the elastic modulus of the soil and the distribution of the displacements within the soil media.
