Research on Cooperative Learning: Implications for Practice

Abstract
This article provides an overview of research on cooperative learning with an emphasis on issues related to the implementation of cooperative learning groups. Specific benefits of cooperative learning for cognitive development, academic achievement, and social-emotional growth are reviewed, and a theoretical rationale for explaining such benefits is presented. Types of groups and benefits of each are described. Specific questions relevant to the formation and implementation of cooperative learning groups are answered on the basis of research. Finally, a model for implementation is described which emphasizes the enhancement of higher-order thinking, effectance motivation, and social skills.Keywords
