Abstract
The author studied 63 strains of dermatophytes with red pigment and could not find clear cut morphological differences between T. megninii and Trichophyton rubrum. The nutritional test with ammonium nitrate agar, as described by Georg, allowed clear differentiation of the 2 species. During the etiological study of 519 cases of dermatomycoses, T. megninii was isolated from 43 patients (8.3%). Previous reported rarity of T. megninii might in part be explained by confusion with T. rubrum and the routine use of the ammonium nitrate test to distinguish between the 2 species is recommended. As both dermatophytes with red pigment are frequently found in nails, glabrous skin and beard and are very rarely isolated from the scalp, it is suggested that the latter region has particular conditions of resistance to these fungi.
