Abstract
The vv (6-row) genotype was substituted for the VV (2-row) genotype in Compana barley and the VV for the vv genotype in Vantage by back-crossing. The effect on yield was determined by growing the parents and reconstituted varieties in yield tests at three locations in 2 years. Yield was not affected by substituting vv for VV in Compana but was sharply reduced by substituting VV for vv in Vantage. Observations at Lethbridge indicated that each reconstituted variety was essentially identical to the recurrent parent in tillering capacity. Seed size and number of seeds per head were affected by the v locus, since an increased number of smaller seeds was associated with the vv genotype and a decreased number of larger seeds with the VV genotype. The results indicate no difference in yield potential between the two genotypes, provided that each is present in a variety with the appropriate combination of the various yield components for that genotype. Keywords
