Spatial structure of protoclusters and the formation of galaxies

Abstract
Three-dimensional models of ‘pancakes’ are constructed and their temporal evolution is followed. It is shown that in the course of evolution thermal, hydrodynamic and gravitational instabilities arise which lead to the fragmentation of gaseous protoclusters and the subsequent clustering of fragments into galaxies and clusters of galaxies. This scheme is shown to explain a number of observational facts.
