Abstract
Collision-assisted dissociation has been used to compare the ions formed by (a) the addition of trimethylsilylium ((CH3)3Si+) to benzene and toluene, and (b) the protonation of trimethylsilyl-substituted aromatics. The spectra of the isobaric ions are essentially identical at both high (8 keV) and low (3)3Si is π or σ bonded.
