Abstract
The anatomy, physiology, embryology, and pathology of the carotid body are reviewed, stressing the capability of the normal and neoplastic structure to produce pressor amines. Nine new cases of carotid body tumors are reported including a patient with a malignant tumor with a facial nerve paralysis and regional node metastases. The clinical presentation and management emphasize the preoperative catecholamine determinations and angiographic studies. Keywords
