CONDUCTION ELECTRON SPIN RESONANCE IN SMALL PARTICLES SUSPENDED IN SOLID MATRIX

Abstract
Small particles of lithium dispersed in matrices of CO2 and xenon have been investigated using E.P.R. techniques. For the case of Li in a CO2 matrix we have found that interactions associated with the matrix material affect both the line-width and the position of the resonance transitions. Such effects are not observed when a xenon matrix is employed. Samples for which the particle size exceeded 1 000 Å were characterized by a magnetic susceptibility which was independent of temperature. For smaller particles (e.g. 30 Å), however, a transition temperature region was found in which the susceptibility changes from a Pauli susceptibility to one which varies as 1/T. These results are in agreement with previous theoretical predictions
