Abstract
Amoxycillin is a new semi-synthetic penicillin with a broad spectrum of activity similar to that of ampicilin. Given by the oral route, it shows significantly greater activity than ampicillin against a number of experimental infections in animals. This greater activity is to be expected from the compound’s much better absorption. Cross-over studies in man have shown that peak levels obtained with amoxycillin were approximately double those obtained with ampicillin and levels were also significantly higher throughout the whole six hours following dosage. Urinary excretion of amoxycilin was also improved, the recovery in the first six hours being 60% compared with 40% for ampicilin. Absorption of amoxycillin was not greatly influenced by food. Further tests have shown that amoxycillin achieves considerably higher serum levels than pivampicillin orally during the period 2–6 h after dosing.
