Abstract
The origin of sleep disorders is described from an anthropological point of view. Case studies are used to illustrate three causes of sleep disorders that derive from this theory: (1) failure to maintain a primary relationship, (2) increased vulnerability at night, and (3) failure to separate and individuate. In addition, the observation of higher arousability in poor sleepers is discussed and a case is presented as evidence. Some anthropological speculations are made as to how the two might interrelate. Keywords
