The cost and effectiveness of public notification of MCL violations

Abstract
Data on the cost and effectiveness of the mandated public notification of maximum contaminant level violations were analyzed for 164 water systems in 14 states. Of the 164 systems that provided data for this statistical reserch, 43 percent of the water systems indicated that they did not design their notification to elicit public support for improvements in treatment capability. For those systems that did, 61 percent indicated it was ineffective, 23 percent said it was somewhat effective, and 16 percent said it was very effective.
