Tongue-Thrust in Infancy

Abstract
In this study tongue-thrust was defined as the placement of the tongue over the lower gum pad in sucking and swallowing. A sample of 294 newborn infants was observed by student nurses and other medical personnel. It was found that 286 (97.2%) of these subjects exhibited tongue-thrust as defined. Twenty seven infants, (9.2%) did this consistently. Thirty six (12.2%) thrusted over the lower lip only occasionally. It was noted that the children who did not have tongue-thrust had feeding problems such as those caused by cleft-palate. It is concluded that tongue-thrusting is normal in infancy.
