General and Cerebral Anaphylaxis in the Monkey (Macacus Rhesus)

Abstract
Summary: Fatal anaphylactic shock has been produced at will in monkeys following single or multiple preparatory intravenous injections of liberal amounts of fresh undiluted egg-white and in one instance by sensitization through the gastro-intestinal route. Passive transfer of rabbit anti-egg-white serum to a single monkey resulted in anaphylactic death upon injection of antigen. Local cerebral anaphylaxis as evidenced by contralateral focal symptoms and pathologic brain changes including necrosis have been observed in sensitized monkeys upon subsequent injection of the specific antigen. The pathologic picture of fatal anaphylaxis in monkeys is markedly different from that seen in any of the usual laboratory animals.
