BASAL METABOLISM BEFORE AND AFTER A SUMMER VACATION

Abstract
In 1910, no change in the metabolism of one subject was noted as the result of a vacation. A series of experiments on 9 subjects (3 men and 6 women), made before and after vacation, showed no change in O consumption after vacation. In 1920, studies on 4 women and 1 man indicated an average O consumption slightly less after the vacation than before, but with no constant measurable effect of the summer''s recuperation on metabolism. In 1925, a series of observations was made on 5 subjects under identical conditions: 2 showed an increase in metabolism; in one, the O consumption rose from 142 cc. before to 172 cc. after vacation; in the other, the change was from 196 cc. to 259 cc. In 1927, observations were made on 6 men and 3 women. The average O consumption for the entire group changed only from 187 cc. before to 190 cc. afterward. These results indicate that there is little effect of recuperation on metabolism.
