Abstract
A general approach to determining the optimal sample size and the number of samples for solid waste sampling is presented. Results demonstrate that any distribution or transformation for percentage separation data could be used satisfactorily, provided the sample size is sufficiently large. However, for the arcsine transformation and a gamma distribution, a smaller sample size appears to provide an adequate representation of the overall body of waste. This study examined twelve combinations of distribution and transformations for sample sizes ranging from 46.8 kg to 3,000 kg and found relationships among precision, number of samples, and sample size. Keywords
