Abstract
The sociology of Pierre Bourdieu : factors in constructing a theor y of the political field Jean-Yves Caro In Western social formations, the political field helps to perpetuate the domination of one social class over the others by producing a specifie condition — electoral legitimisation — which is both confined to its symbolic dimension and controlled by the dominant class. Pierre Bourdieu's sociological paradigm allows this specifie domination to be more thoroughly analysed by linking its major motives with the general case of symbolic domination. While not denying the particularities of the objects of political science, this approach brings into their theoretical perception constraints imported from general sociology. This undertaking would seem valuable on two counts ; in the first place, seeking consistency with other areas of social science is a scientific objective which in itself justifies such aims and, secondly, the heuristic value of these constraints can be demonstrated. In addition to the results already accomplished by Bourdieu, evidence of this is furnished by the possibility of an original understanding of " spectator politics ".
