Ophthalmopathy of Graves' Disease

Abstract
The incidence of severe ophthalmopathy after treatment of Graves' disease with radioactive iodine, surgery, or antithyroid drugs was compared in 120 patients in a retrospective study. Whereas three patients in a group of 72 treated with radioactive iodine developed severe ophthalmopathy (4%), no such cases were seen among 34 patients treated with antithyroid drugs alone. In a group of 14 patients treated with surgery, one developed severe ophthalmopathy. The development of severe ophthalmopathy did not seem to be related to hypothyroidism. Further studies are necessary to elucidate the relationship between radioactive iodine treatment for Graves' disease and the development of severe ophthalmopathy.
