Abstract
THE fungi causing infections solely of the glabrous skin, scalp, beard and nails are known as dermatophytes, or cutaneous fungi. These fungi do not produce visceral infections. However, Candida albicans, although producing chiefly cutaneous and mucousmembrane infections, can involve the gastrointestinal tract, bronchopulmonary system and other viscera.It is important that a correct diagnosis be made before treatment is undertaken. The dermatologist has frequently been called upon to undo the damage caused by the use of strong, irritating local applications prescribed for a nonexistent infection.
