Complement Fixation Test in Kala-Azar Using Mycobacterium butyricum Antigen

Abstract
Complement fixation tests for Kala-azar were performed in humans (6 cases) and dogs (5 animals) naturally infected using a methylic extract of M. butyricum as antigen. Positive results were obtained in all sera, titers ranging from 1:80 to 1:5120. Negative results were obtained from patients suffering from chronic Chagas'' disease, muco-cutaneous leishmaniasis, syphilis, schisto-somiasis mansoni and tuberculoid leprosy. Cross reactions were observed in 40% of lepromatous lepers, in 3 out of 15 cases of active tuberculosis (low titers) and in one case of acute Chagas'' disease. These results are similar to those reported with tubercle bacillus antigen.
