Abstract
In 1976, social workers discovered that wife abuse was a major social problem affecting a large, diverse group of women. This article traces changes in social workers' perspectives on the problem. The author concludes that the increased focus on individual and couple treatment has deflected attention away from the social origin of the problem. Keywords
