Abstract
The author investigates the one-loop effective potential for some typical external fields in electrodynamics, in particular for a constant magnetic field and a laser field. The treatment is based on the corresponding Green function as explicit functional of the prescribed field. Schwinger's source- and proper-time techniques are used throughout. Keywords
