The Cognitive Control of Behavior: A Comparison of Systematic Desensitization and Hypnotically-Induced “Directed Experience” Techniques

Abstract
27 student volunteers were equally divided into three experimental groups: (a) Direct Experience Hypnotic Technique (DET); (b) Systematic Desensitization (SD); and (c) Control. Pre- and post-treatment scores on the Mandler-Sarason Test Anxiety Questionnaire and the Fear Survey Schedule were compared among the three groups. A significant reduction in anxiety was noted, primarily due to the DET group treatment. A similar change occurred in the fear scores. Implications for further research are discussed.
