Histamine, antihistamines and atopic dermatitis

Abstract
Pruritus is without doubt the most distressing feature of atopic dermatitis (AD). Antihistamines are widely prescribed in an effort to relieve this symptom, although their value remains controversial and it is not clear which compounds are most effective. Histamine is an important inflammatory mediator and neurotransmitter with diverse properties, so that there are numerous possible mechanisms of action in AD for its antagonists. We present here an overview of the actions of histamine, and its antagonists, and a summary of the evidence regarding the possible roles of these compounds in AD.
