A dental health survey was conducted at a nearby convalescent center involving 112 patients. An average of 26.73 decayed, missing, and filled teeth (DMFT) was recorded for the entire population. The dentulous population of 49 individuals had a dmft of 19.96, periodontal disease score (PI) of 4.80, and an oral hygiene score (OHI-S) of 2.45. Two hundred sixty-three extractions, or an average of 5.4 extractions per person, were indicated. The average number of dental services and treatment needed per person for the entire population was 2.3, while for the dentulous group the average was 3.2. A discussion of the above results is given in the report and the implications of the interview given to 95 of the patients is also examined. The problems and possible solutions to rendering dental service to nursing home patients are discussed, and several programs using the manpower and facilities of the university of michigan school of dentistry are proposed.
