Abstract
The elastic and inelastic scattering of electrons by a standing wave of intense and coherent light are investigated by means of the Helmholtz-Kirchhoff diffraction theory. The time-averaged theories, used previously for the description of Kapitza-Dirac scattering, are shown to be inadequate. Keywords
