The Short-Term Side Effects of the Insecticidal Treatment of Clear Lake, Lake County, California, in 1962

Abstract
Clear Lake, Lake County, California, was treated to control the Clear Lake gnat, Chaoborus astictopus Dyar & Shannon, during the summer of 1962 with 3 ppb methyl parathion. Concurrent with this control project, information was gathered on representatives of the major trophic groups. This data was compared with similar data gathered at the same time the previous non-treatment year to determine if any immediate side effects of the insecticide were manifest. Although it was impossible to study all the organisms involved with the treatment, results indicated a possible depressing effect only upon the zooplankton levels. No direct effects on the bottom fauna, other than C. astictopus, or on the fishery were observed.
